Howdy!

We are here to guide you step-by-step through the process of building your home farm.

Step : 1 Unboxing is Therapy

OK, let’s get to it. If you have ordered an Altifarm Combo, you must receive four packages in total, else just one. First, open the main Altifarm package and lay the components on floor. Refer to the User Manual (in blue) and go through the safety instructions. If Mobility pack (smallest box) is available, it needs to be mounted on the base frame using a simple thread-on mechanism over the black PU feet. The metal frame components were pre-assembled and must slide on to each other easily. The plastic components are mostly pick and place, and the self-watering units snap on to inner trays. The best part of Altifarm is that it is completely tool-free and gets done in about 15 minutes; the same applies for Expansion Packs as well. Open the Grow Light pack and Greenhouse Packs only when the Altifarm is set up. Please store the packages for reuse and dispose the plastic wrappings responsibly.

Step : 2 Right location matters

Access to good sunlight is the first consideration to pick the location for your home farm. Choose a balcony or window with best sunlight access in your house, 14-16 hours minimum. Almost all edible plants need good sunlight, the amount varies from plant to plant. Light intensity, duration and spectrum influence plant biomass, morphology and flowering times. Lack of adequate light could lead to tall spindly stem with small/discoloured leaves leaning towards available light source. If you don’t have adequate sunlight, there’s no work around, you must invest in a Grow Light pack.
Besides this, Altifarm does not need water supply or drainage. Nor does it make a corner or the floor damp. You may place it anywhere and use the Mobility pack to move it around easily.
Use the Greenhouse pack to protect the plants in winter. Keep the mini door open on warmer days.

Step : 3 Right Mix; Perfect Produce

Once Altifarm is set up, it’s time to look at the growing media. The selection of soil influences how fast the plants grow and how tasty they are, also minimizes pests and plant disease.

Two options

  1. Soil-less using Coco-peat, Rockwool or other sterile media
  2. Using Soil – packaged garden soil or homemade potting mix with fortification

If you are a beginner, keep it simple and go for readily available premixed garden soil (organic is preferred) in a bag from a garden centre or a store.

A good mix ideally should remain loose, must contain enough organic matter to hold nutrients and must aerate well for healthy root growth. Squeeze the bag to test the quality of the potting soil mix, it should be soft, pliable and lightly moist. If they’re dry or cakey, it’s a sign that the soil is old, infertile and lacking nutrients.

If you like to get your proverbial hands dirty, you may make your potting mix by mixing garden soil with manure, compost, mulch, perlite, organic matter or other components to make homemade mix which is light weight but rich in nutrients for healthy plants. We would come out with more articles on this soon. If soil is used straight from the yard, it is important to sterilize it to minimize possibility of pests and plant diseases. This article explains it – More.

Soil-less farming on Altifarm has multifold benefits – quicker plant growth, lesser chance of weeds, pests or diseases, reduced overall weight of tubs etc. However, it may get a bit technical – precise monitoring and administration of nutrients, water quality and pH, and a few other things. We would come up with an article on this soon.

Step : 4 Reaping and sowing; choosing the seeds and planting

Before choosing a plant, search online or ask an expert on what conditions a specific plant need. Also, even if they say a plant is not a local variety, it does not mean you can grow it. Some plants thrive in a variety of climates, but others might require a specific temperature or a time of the year or a region. It might involve some amount of trial and error.

Starting from seeds is cheaper as compared to buying starter plants and is hugely rewarding to see little sprouts growing into plants. However, we recommend that first time users begin with starter plants so that their excitement to see quick results don’t turn into disappointment as some take their own time to germinate and thrive.

Seeds are as finicky as they get – some like warmth, some cold, some like darkness, some light. Some like to get planted deep, some on the surface. It’s better to spray water with a mist pump than with a watering can. The best place to find this information is on the seed packet itself.

It might be easier use an inexpensive seedling tray, they provide warmth and humidity for quicker sprouting which could then be transplanted to Altifarm. Upon sprouting, plants typically need a lot of light, our Grow Light pack accelerates their growth to full size.

Step : 5 Watering the Right Way

The unique self-watering system takes the guesswork out of watering. Typically, overwatering kills as much plants as underwatering. Our system waters from beneath using capillary action of soil and gravity without needing any motor, pump or plumbing. It’s OK to top up once a week or so, through the spout when the indicator goes down. A dry spell of a day or two between watering cycles helps the roots to grow stronger.
Seedlings might need watering from the top, use a mist spray (make one by reusing an old window cleaner bottle) for this.

Altifarm Grow Light Pack takes the sunlight requirement out of the equation – it supports plants through germination to vegetative growth to harvesting, with zero sunlight involved and this means you could farm even in a kitchen or basement. Our unique wavelength ratio is chosen to support most varieties of plants across their growth stage with minimal power consumption and wasted heat energy. Plants love them!

Step : 6 Here comes the sun; Indoor Grow Lights

LED bars are bolted onto sliders which allow lateral movement of these bars. It’s a good practice to move the position of the bars on the bars to help bring a uniform dense canopy as some plants grow towards the bar like a mohawk hairstyle. Pruning the plants at a decent height helps to branch out laterally and have a thick canopy and slows their ascent towards the LED bars.

It is advisable to follow the pattern of natural light and keep the lights on for 14-16 hours every day of the week. You may use an inexpensive wall outlet timer to automate this.

That’s it, you are an Altifarmer now. Grow fresh produce at home all year round, like a Pro!
